The River Marron is one of the main tributaries to the River Derwent. It joins the Derwent at Bridgefoot, some four miles up-stream of Workington, where it discharges into the Irish Sea. With the full co-operation of the landowner, it was possible to remove the old railway abutments on both river banks and remove the 150m section of flood embankment. The project has resulted in:-

-  additional 2km of new fencing ensured there is now a generous buffer strip and wildlife corridor

-  additional floodplain storage and ….

-  the removal of the old engineering constraints on the channel.

The removal of the flood embankment and old railway abutments removed the in river channel modifications (as required under the Water Framework Directive) and improved the floodplain connectivity and associated flood storage.
