Great Big Green Week Foraging and Himalayan Balsam Bashing

  • Wiza Beck Barton Laws CA7 9JR United Kingdom (map)

Under the expert guidance of a Forage Box forager we will explore the riverbank for edible plants

When: Saturday 15th June 10am - 1pm

Where: Wiza Beck, Wigton CA7 9JR

What: Join us in Great Big Green Week to explore the riverbank for any edible plants under the expert guidance of a Forage Box forager. You will be surprised at how much there is to find, including the flowers of Himalayan Balsam. This non-native invasive species is spreading easily and covers large area of riverbank, making it impossible for native plants to thrive. Therefore, in the second half of the morning we will spend time pulling these plants up. Most plants grow in the River Wiza on islands, so it’s recommended you wear wellies.

This event will get you directly involved - this includes identifying, picking and tasting a range of wild species that will be found on the day and as a reward for helping us clear some Himalayan Balsam you will get some wild inspired refreshments (let us know any dietary requirements). We will give you information on safety, ethics, etiquette, sustainability and the law and a closer look at edibles and their poisonous lookalikes.

Who: Suitable for aged 12+

Notes: Please ensure you wear clothing and footwear suitable for the weather and for an outdoor setting. Sturdy footwear is advised. Children must be accompanied.

Cost: £5, under 16’s free - booking required.
