What: Join our community drop-in balsam-bashing event and help make a difference

We’re teaming up with Jennings Brewery to take on Himalayan balsam, a non-native invasive plant that is spreading along the beautiful River Cocker.

Why does it matter? Himalayan balsam crowds out native plants, reduces habitat for wildlife and can contribute to riverbank erosion, affecting both nature and water quality. Healthier rivers support healthier ecosystems and, in this case, better beer too.

This summer, we’re fighting back with four ‘Pull Together’ events, giving everyone the chance to roll up their sleeves and help protect this special river.

To support the campaign, Jennings has brewed Balsam Basher, a beer with delicate floral notes inspired by the plant’s distinctive aroma. Every pint helps support efforts to improve water quality and restore the health of the catchment that supplies water for the brewery’s beers.

As a thank you, everyone who joins a balsam-bashing session will receive a free pint in the Jennings taproom after the event.

Together, we’re aiming to remove 132,000 balsam plants and prevent an estimated 33 million seeds from spreading across the Cocker catchment, helping to create a healthier future for the river, its wildlife and the communities that depend on it.

Please note: No experience is needed and no sign-up is required - just turn up on the day. Everyone is welcome, and it’s a great activity for all the family (Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult).

Balsam is easy to pull by hand, so it’s a simple, hands-on way to make a real difference. Come along for an hour or stay longer, meet others, and help us clear balsam along the river.

Balsam bashes involve manual work on uneven ground, with stiles in areas of limited access. Long sleeves and trousers recommended. Sturdy footwear or wellies. Waterproofs and weather-appropriate clothing, drinks, lunch and gloves.
