Assistant Project Officer

Full-time: 35 hours a week for 1 year (with possible extension)

Location: West Cumbria

Salary: Starting on £24,955 and 9% pension (optional)

Application deadline: 9am on 29th April 2024

West Cumbria Rivers Trust (WCRT) is a registered environmental charity dedicated to improving the watercourses, their wildlife and surrounding catchments in West Cumbria for people and wildlife. Our patch covers several principal river catchments and seven iconic lakes spanning a substantial part of the Lake District National Park, West Cumbria, and the Solway. We have an impressive track record of successful delivery of projects.

Working closely with existing members of our team, you will help deliver projects to restore watercourses, improve water quality, reduce flood risk, improve catchment biodiversity, and connect people with the natural environment. The role will include working with farmers, contractors, volunteers, and partner organisations to deliver projects from inception to completion, with support from Project Officers. The catchments where the role is focused contain populations of critically endangered freshwater pearl mussels together with other iconic species such as salmon and trout. As a result, monitoring of these species to help inform our work programme will be an important part of the job, together with managing invasive species.

The successful candidate will be able to work with farmers to develop projects, have a degree in a relevant field, some relevant work experience and be willing to use their initiative with support from others. It is ideally suited to someone looking to develop further skills and experience in the conservation sector and someone who is interested in managing projects of their own in the future.

This is an exciting opportunity with no two days likely to be the same. The successful candidate will be part of a friendly, passionate and helpful team, reporting to a Project Manager and supported by the wider staff team. If that isn’t enough, we have a plentiful supply of chocolate biscuits too.

If you believe that you have the passion, commitment and skills to take this exciting opportunity forward then we would like to hear from you.
